The finding: of 70 outdoor drop shades sold in the U.S. that we checked, only 8 give a wind speed in mph. 41 (59%) say nothing about wind anywhere on the product page.
Wind is one of the first things people ask about outdoor shades, especially on wide or exposed patios. Yet a shopper comparing shades usually can't compare them on wind at all, because most sellers don't say.
Sellers who do give a figure describe it differently. Some cite a lab test, some a rating, some a level on the Beaufort wind scale, some a European "class". Few say whether the shade was open or closed, or what it was mounted to. So a higher number on one page doesn't show a sturdier shade than a lower number on another. Our wind page lists every statement word for word.
Ask the seller in writing what wind the shade is rated for, how that was measured, and when it should be retracted. Check the installation manual, which sometimes says more than the product page. And confirm mounting with the maker or a licensed installer, since what the shade is fixed to matters as much as the fabric.
We read the product page (and any linked spec sheet or manual) for each of the 132 products on this site on Nov 1, 2026, and recorded any wind wording exactly as written. "Any wind wording" includes instructions such as "roll up in strong winds". "Speed in mph" means the wording includes a figure in miles per hour. Products found only on a store category page were left out. This is a snapshot of what sellers publish, not a test of the products. Full method.
