How we check specs and prices

Patio Shade Finder lists 132 outdoor drop shades, retractable awnings and pergola shades from 32 sellers. This page explains exactly where each detail comes from and what we won't do.

Who we are, and who we aren't

We're an independent site. We don't make, sell or install shades, and no maker or store owns us. We're not engineers or licensed installers, and we haven't tested these products. What we do is collect what sellers publish, put it side by side, and show you where each fact came from so you can check it.

How a product gets listed

  1. Find the product page. We use the maker's own page where there is one, otherwise the store's product page. A product we can only find on a store's category page, with no page of its own, isn't listed.
  2. Read every field from that page, or from a spec sheet or manual the maker publishes (58 listings link one). The fields are: product type, how it runs, motor power, widest size, height or projection, mounting options, wind wording and price.
  3. Copy, don't interpret. Wind wording and mounting options are copied as written. Sizes are converted to feet and inches only for display, with the original inches shown alongside.
  4. Leave gaps as gaps. If a page doesn't state something, the listing says "not published" or "not stated". We don't estimate sizes, and we don't work out sale prices the seller doesn't show.
  5. Record the date. Each listing shows the date its details were read. Every listing on the site was last read on Nov 1, 2026. When we re-check a listing, that date changes.

When sources disagree

The same product sometimes shows a different size, wind figure or price in two places, for example on the maker's site and at a store. We show the figure from the page we link to, and note the conflict on the product page where we know about it.

Wind ratings

We copy wind wording exactly and never rank it, because sellers measure wind in different ways or not at all. The wind page explains the kinds of wording you'll see and lists every statement we found.

Our notes on each product

Each product page has a short note on who the product fits. Those notes are based only on the published details, compared across the whole list (for example, how many other products are sold at that width). They are not reviews and don't describe how a product performs.

Electrical work and mounting

We list how each seller says the motor is powered. Hardwired motors need a licensed electrician. We don't advise on mounting: what an awning or shade can be fixed to depends on your wall, fascia or beam, so confirm it with the maker or a licensed installer.

Money

Some links to stores may earn us a commission if you buy. That never changes what's listed or the order: lists sort by width or by price, whichever you choose. See the affiliate disclosure.
