Short answer: a single outdoor drop shade from Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart or the big blinds websites tops out at 12 ft wide. One shade sold on Wayfair, FlexPatio Motorized Roller Shades, is listed at 18 ft 5 in in fixed sizes. Past that, only specialist makers go further, and most of the widest are sold through dealers. Retractable awnings go wider: 22 of the 50 we track are sold at least 20 ft wide.
We looked up the widest size each brand publishes for 60 drop shades and 50 retractable awnings that list a maximum width. Here is how many are sold at least as wide as each size:
| Opening width | Drop shades (of 60) | Awnings (of 50) |
|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | 57 | 49 |
| 10 ft | 38 | 48 |
| 12 ft | 17 | 43 |
| 14 ft | 11 | 35 |
| 16 ft | 11 | 33 |
| 18 ft | 10 | 25 |
| 20 ft | 7 | 22 |
| 24 ft | 4 | 8 |
Rust bars: a price is posted online. Gray bars: no online price, usually sold through dealers.
If your opening is more than 12 ft across with no post in the middle, a single drop shade means a specialist maker, a custom order and often a dealer quote. The common alternative is two shades side by side with a post between them, which opens up most of the 60 shades listed. An awning covers more width in one piece, but it shades the floor rather than the open side of the patio.
Each width is the largest size the brand or store publishes on its own product page or spec sheet, read on Nov 1, 2026. Where a brand sells several products, we show its widest. We don't estimate sizes a seller doesn't publish. Every product, with its source link, is in the drop shade and awning lists. Full method.
